Psychosynthesis is a current of modern psychology, conceived by Roberto Assagioli in 1911, which is mainly interested in investigating the meaning, the purpose, the direction of life for people, in a broader sense the dimension of being or spiritual.
Using psychosynthesis tools within a coaching session can be very useful to achieve deep transformations in coachees and work at the level of the “person” going beyond specific performance goals. As with other coaching tools, before introducing a psychosynthesis technique, the coach must assess that it is the right time for the person.
An exercise that makes one think about life purpose is “the 5 questions about direction”.
The coachee is invited to get comfortable and enter a more intimate dimension, soft music in these cases can help, and 5 sheets of paper with colored markers are provided.
The coachee must respond with a drawing to these questions:
Where did I come from?
Where am I now?
Where am I going?
What is standing in my way?
What will help me get there?
Using the metaphor of drawing facilitates the emergence of deeper answers than might come forth using only the rational mind. The exercise is useful for fostering insight into one’s life purpose and direction, major challenges, and personal resources. It can be used in goal setting or more generally as an exploratory tool.
